KEVLACAT Electronic Upgrade

A recent Kevlacat job needed a full electronic upgrade. We upgraded the dash with 2 x GPSMAPS 8410xsv screens, this involved a custom acrylic dash bent to specific angle of the dash with new switch panel and repositioning proportionately.

The GPSMAPS 8410xsv’s were loaded with the Navionics Vision Plus charts and we set the Active Captain up to the screens and instructed customer on the future use of the app. A new compass was mounted on the forward sloping side of the dash, and to the port side, the radio hatch was untidy and needed a refresh, so we installed a new VHF radio and Fusion MS-RA210 stereo and speakers. We flush-mounted these on a black back ground that was esthetically pleasing to the eye, yet functional.

Kevlacats have a reputation for transducers not reading well at speed but the customer knew we were known for doing the impossible and valued our ability to design what was needed to make this work. Our design team came up with a drawing of a bracket to fit the latest PS70 transducer on the Kevlacat, from here, we made a model and took it to our engineering team who made the proto type. Pleased with the result we progressed to powder coating and fitting to the boat asap and took for a water test. The result were fine on a reasonably rough day the boat was planning at 22 kts and reading and mapping the bottom at speed.

Also fitted to the roof was the MSC10 which help stabilize the transducer.

To Run all these new electronics we updated the house supply to a 10 mm cable and reconfigured the wiring behind the dash with a fuse panel and new nmea System secured in place.

The PS70 The Panoptix™ is stainless steel thru-hull transducer is powered by Garmin RapidReturn™ sonar, which gives you live sonar views up to 300 metres below the surface.

GARMIN RAPIDRETURN SONAR

This sonar sends multiple simultaneous pings through the water column. The result is live sonar capabilities up to 300 metres, giving deep sea anglers a real-time view of what’s below the surface.

LIVEVÜ™ DOWN SONAR

See real-time live sonar images up to 300 metres. With Garmin RapidReturn, anglers can see small baitfish and target game fish in real time. The wide 120-degree beam angle covers huge areas of water.

TRADITIONAL SONAR

View crisp, clear fish arches with excellent separation of targets under the boat.

TRIPLE-BEAM SONAR

Get a 3-way traditional sonar split that gives sonar returns from the port and starboard directions, as well as targets directly under the boat, in an easy-to-understand traditional sonar view. Adjust the beam angles to fine-tune your 3 columns of sonar data.

REALVÜ™ 3D SONAR

Historical scanning technology helps find fish and build a map of the ocean floor while your boat is moving. It shows the entire water column you have passed over in 3D, from the bottom to the surface and all fish in between. The True Motion 3D sonar returns feature now follows the vessel’s course over ground.

QUICKDRAW CONTOURS FEATURE

Survey areas of the ocean floor in great detail. New QuickDraw Contours feature improvement allows users to survey wide swaths of the ocean floor, even at depths up to 300 metres.
